I love to read in spanish and Pedro Antonio de Alarcón is among the best of XIX century writers in Spain. I have read many of his novels and in particular La Comendadora, El Amigo de la Muerte, y El Sombrero de Tres Picos. In El Escándalo,I find myself subconsciously involved in the drama, the angst, the doubts, the joy, the regrets, and many other emotions the books protagonist is suffering. It is, after all, a story every man or woman, sooner or later, gets to experience in life. In this story the protagonist finds himself in deep conversation with an old priest who hardly says anything, and in his long confession finds that the path to his redemption is tortuous and that happiness cannot be found by force.Product details

Late nineteenth century novel set in Madrid, about scandal and redemption. Very traditional Catholic ideas about human failing and redemption. Psychology of characters is not convincing.
