The work being reviewed here was from a free download to my Kindle. This is one more of the many reasons I am fond of my Kindle as there is little chance that I would have purchased a hard copy of this book and that would have been my loss. Anyway....This work begins with a brief sketch of the life of Captain Cook. I have read several full blown biographies of this most famous of Captains and explorers but I have to tell you that this brief sketch was worth the download alone and if a reader's interest lies in this direction, this little introduction to Cook's log will most certainly stimulate interest and quite possible the motivation to read one of the several great biographies available.
This work though is primarily the actual log kept by Cook during his first voyage around the world. It begins with a full roster of those who left England on August 26, 1768. It supplies names, rank, position on the ship and eventual date of death. (Many familiar family names will be found her by the reader).

What follows is a fascinating story. A copy of Cook's actual log; a very detailed log I might say. I will tell you right now that there are hundreds of nautical readings; latitudes, longitudes, wind speeds, depth readings, temperature readings weather reports. To be honest I did quite a lot of "skim reading" when I can to these parts (and here were many) of the log book. Likewise as to the references to the mechanics of the ship as I confess to you that I do not know a "topsail" from an anchor chain, much less "Topgallant Yards." This was fine by me though. I am not a sailor, never been a sailor and have no intention of ever stepping on a ship or boat that leaves the sight of land. I love to read about such things though.
The most interesting aspect of this book for me though was when the good Captain recorded his observations as to his crew and the various indigenous peoples encountered on this voyage. It was also of great interest to me just how much Cook worried, suffered and fretted over the well being of his crew. This man was not only adventuresome, smart and able, he also seemed to care greatly for his fellow travelers.
Do not that some of the terms used here will take some research and getting use to. The writing style is typical of those times as is the sentence structure, the strange use of capital letters which pop up in the most unlikely places, and indeed, much of the spelling. This all fascinated me. I would also recommend, if you are extremely interested and really want to get the most out of this work, you should have a good atlas; both old and new, close at hand. This will enhance the reading of this work greatly.
This work is most certainly not for everyone but with the asking price here; which is nothing, you might want to download this one and give it a try. I suspect there are more people, like me, who will enjoy many aspects of this work.

What a very good read I can only imagine the challenges they had after reading this I was amazed on just how tuff it was to just stay alive....
You can't read all of the log of Captain Cook unless you are a sailor who can read charts. I can't, so I had to skip all the longitude and latitude and depths etc... but what remained was fascinating. A surprisingly enjoyable read. Follow it up with the six part miniseries and you will have learned a great deal about sea exploration, life aboard ship,and Captain Cook.
First of all, I like that the version is free!
It's a good book. I like the condensed biography at the beginning. It was helpful in understanding the material that followed. I liked reading most of it, but I glossed over all the nautical readings. It surprised me that he, as captain, would write such detailed daily logs. It makes me appreciate all that he and his crew went through in their voyage.
Very interesting to read and almost straight from the logbooks of Captain Cook. One frustrating thing is that the writing in the logbook often refers to illustrations which I believe were drawn on the pages or in the margins which could not be incorporated into the electronic kindle book I purchased (for free). This would have been huge to incorporate. The book itself is still so entertaining from the mundane daily weather and sail updates to the day to day exploration of the unknown islands out at sea and the interactions with the native peoples. It is hard to put this one down.
Not a spellbinding narrative; these are James Cook's actual log books and contain lengthy passages of sextant readings, weather, currents, and so on. It picks up when the Endeavour makes land and Cook has to deal with colonial bureaucrats, establish relations with natives, or discipline misbehaving crew. Cook's personality slowly reveals itself through his dry, veddy British comments on events throughout the voyage. It's also fun to pull up Google Earth and follow along using the daily lattitude & longitude.
The route starts from London, and includes Rio de Janiero, around Tierra del Fuego, Tahiti, circumnavigation of New Zealand, mapping of Australia's east coast, Batavia [Jakarta], and Cape Town. This edition was published in 1893 with and introduction and historical notes throughout by Captain W,J,L, Wharton.
This book would be invaluable for an author writing about 18th century seafaring and exploration.
A fascinating book ~ which in my mind would mean a lot more to
a navigator. Also, this was written in the 17 hundreds and is full of misspellings, lack of polished grammar, etc. In short, if Cook's narrative showed as much care as his readings (navigation) ...
Ah well, I enjoyed it anyway.
My first ever read on the kindle (back in May), and well worth it. Yes, there were regular interspersals of latitude/longitude/weather etc, but it's perfectly possible to skip over that (though I wouldn't mind re-reading sometime with an atlas in hand). But there was a lot of anthropological detail, plus other comments that really give a wonderful picture of Cook's captaincy and how contented a ship he ran, plus several places where his dry wit shines through.
His account of crossing the Equator is most amusing to read, while the low rate of punishment on board (Cook records the few punishments that were given), low death rate, and his obvious concern about the diet of his crew all demonstrate that his crew were happy and healthy, and that their captain was wise and a man of many talents.
Yes, he was a great explorer/sailor/navigator, but this journal shows clearly that he was a great man in character as well.
(PS. For anyone who reads it, you'll come across a mention of Cook feeding his crew on "portable soup"; it's meat aspic, laid out on sheets to dry, then cut into squares and stored, and later reconstituted by soaking in boiling water. In other words, an 18th C version of stock cubes.)
